Sherlock Season III - SPOILERS - Look who is back….

I know a lot has happened today, but can we all stop and take a moment to be thankful for this?

Unfortunately, Sally Donovan will not be back, as Vinette Robinson has moved to California and is filming a pilot for NBC. Best of luck to her, though - it’s nice to see how Sherlock opens all these opportunities.

And that’s the moment I realised how much I like her. I mean I knew I like her but I went with loud “WHAT?”. Best luck to her seconded!

Speaking as one of those little industry worker bees, they could still technically use Vinette Robinson when her pilot wraps. As far as I know she wasn’t a series regular on Sherlock and then the only conflict then would be dates. Most of the NBC pilots are wrapping by mid April. (In fact, Assistance is filming this week and the next in New York City.) If hypothetically she was a series regular on Sherlock she could still do the NBC pilot in what’s called “2nd position,” meaning that the previous show takes precedence should it continue. [Damon Wayans, Jr. did the New Girl pilot in 2nd position to Happy Endings, so when Happy Endings got renewed, his role had to be recast.] Judging by her appearances I bet she was a recur not a regular which means she can usually return at her leisure within a certain limit according to her deal with Assistance (usually three to five episodes max.) Considering the BBC budget I bet they’d even travel her.
If I were Moffat I would use Sally. She was the main advocate of Sherlock’s arrest. We kind of need the catharsis of seeing her eat her words.

YES. THANK YOU.
Everyone else please take a big step back before this gets out of hand.
Right now, we don’t know whether Vinette Robinson is coming back or not. (And even if Vinette didn’t come back, that wouldn’t 100% rule out Sally Donovan returning. It’s TV. There are ways.)
Unless someone can produce more supporting evidence, the article linked above doesn’t prove anything about Sherlock. It doesn’t even say she’s moved to California as suggested. (Maybe she has, maybe she hasn’t. But a pilot may not even turn into a full series, so if she did decide to permanently move to Hollywood it’s not really about that specific show at this point.)
Vinette’s role in Sherlock has never been very large, so it’s not like being a supporting player on another series completely rules out her participation in Series 3.
Additionally, the pilot she’s going to be in wasn’t picked up until mid-January and her casting wouldn’t have been until sometime afterwards. The Sherlock crew knew before all of that whether Sally Donovan was a significant part of The Empty Hearse story, so I can only hope they were in touch with Vinette’s people as appropriate instead of just assuming she’d turn up if needed.
How about we all take a deep breath and let Vinette, her agent, or the Sherlock crew have a chance to tell us if she’ll be back or not.
